Perak calls for abolition of using English for Maths and Science
IPOH, May 23 ─ The Perak state government yesterday urged the Education Ministry to abolish immediately the policy of using English to teach Science and Mathematics as it had failed to achieve its objective. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the ministry should revert to the national language in the teaching of the two subjects to ensure that the students would have a better command of Mathematics and Science. "The state government will forward a formal request to the Education Ministry to reintroduce the national language in the teaching of Science and Mathematics," he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the State Executive Council. He said a study by Unesco revealed that the use of the national language in the teaching of Science and Mathematics was more effective. He said the use of Bahasa Malaysia in national schools and vernacular languages in Tamil and Chinese national-type schools must be speeded up to improve the students' command and understanding of the two subjects. The Menteri Besar said the Perak state government was not belittling the importance of the English language and to improve command in the language, the ministry should introduce the subject at an early stage and reintroduce English literature as a subject. ─ Bernama |
